- Correct timing for ovulation and mating/insemination by blood serum progesterone testing and vaginal cytology
- Ultrasound examination of the uterus and ovaries
- Treatment for cystic ovaries
- Medical treatment for pyometra (in those cases where it is safe to do so)
- Induction of oestrus (bringing the season forward for bitches with a prolonged anestrus)
- Pregnancy confirmation with ultrasound from day 21 post mating
- Correct timing of whelping or caesarian when mating times or ovulation are unknown
- Investigation and treatment of failure to maintain pregnancy
